Women Playing Football in Europe/Spain
Throughout European history, it was difficult for women to play the beautiful game of soccer because they were forbidden, as little girls, to play for clubs. Spain's women national football team has represented Spain in competitions since 1980. As time has gone by, the number of women in the football industry has grown. Although we see an increase of women playing on teams and in clubs, women involved in the football industry are continuously being criticized or dealing with sexist chants, and I should add that women at every level of the game are dealing with this.
With that being said, Spain had a very controversial moment in women's football in which the president of RFEF, Luis Rubiables, kissed a Spanish player after Spain won the Women's World Cup highlighting the problem with machismo attitudes (Keeley). Even though this was sadly brushed off to the world, after some time, people have taken it as a lesson.
That particular event has not stopped girls from attempting to enter this career and persevere. Spain, as of now, has become one of the top European nations in the women's category. Their victory against England helped raise awareness to other girls in Spain to not feel afraid in taking the step to be involved in football and be like the women in that team representing their country. These female athletes are role models for little girls who dream of being a part of a football team.

I greatly enjoyed hearing about your personal experience in sports and how your family served as role models to you. Similar to how role models in your life broke down barriers that may have prevented you from feeling accepted in sports, I believe media coverage has an important role in exposing people (especially younger populations) to sports so that they feel empowered to play sports. While media coverage of women’s sports has nearly tripled since 2019, the coverage of women’s sports is not equal to men’s since women’s sporting events are not marketed equally, are not given primetime coverage, and frequently include the objectification of women athletes. For this reason, I think steps need to be taken that create equality in media coverage for men’s and women’s sports such as through equal coverage times and quality/professionalism of coverage.

This is a great perspective and insight about this blog. Thank you for acknowledging my personal experience. It is really important to emphasize how the equality between both genders can be really unfair and something we need to change. Bringing up both genders receiving the same media coverage can be such a game changer for the industry. I found it really interesting how much the coverage and viewer time for women's sports has increased, are you someone who engages/ watches women sports? If not what would convince you to watch it more?

DeleteI really enjoyed reading your thoughts on women's involvement in Spanish football. It is exciting to see that Spain is taking some steps to make women equally paid and acknowledged as the men. It is nice to see that as an American you feel that you were nurtured to play the game of soccer because your elders have done so. You also mentioned how that is important for for young Spanish girls to see the accomplishments of what women in football are accomplishing across the country. Your final question asks what do you think could be done to help incentivize women's involvement in the profesional game of football, and I believe that equal opportunity of exposure is an important step. Exposing young girls to professionals in the game of football will show them that is it possible to accomplish their dreams of playing pro football. Womens football across Spain should be aired more on national television, and womens soccer teams should highlight women who work for them to the public at their games.

DeleteThis is a very enlightening post! One thing that I think can help empower women in the sports industry in Europe and Spain is to give them a platform and create awareness. Women's sports are becoming more popular than ever and the most recent females world cup set the record for most television viewers and record number of fans at the stadiums. Spain won the world cup further giving a platform to the females. It's cool to see the increase in women's sports engagement and I think the awareness will only increase from here.
DeleteI appreciate this response to my post and glad you were able to taken away some of the key points in the information given. I would most definitely agree with you that there needs to be much more exposure on social media and television on broadcasting the women's matches. There has to be some type of money invested to get them on the maps to than inspire the next generation of girls to be on that national team or clubs. I do want to bring up how you said it would be smart to highlight women who work for them at games, do you know of any ways they could do that? I think it really is a great idea!
DeleteThis was a great read as I feel that I took a lot away from this post! It truly is sad to hear about young girls being oppressed from playing Soccer as the opportunity to participate in sports should never be threatened based on whether you are male or female. It is great to see that there has been improvement throughout Europe and the world as a whole, but like you said, there is still a lot more that can be done. Football clubs throughout Europe can start by giving their Men and Women's teams equal access to all facilities, trainers, and other amenities provided by the club. This would include stadiums, practice facilities, transportation services, doctors, ect. FC Barcelona just recently allowed their Women's team to play their matches and Camp Nau as this move was likely done far too late. Giving both teams the same publicity and access can assist in further empowering women's sports by raising awareness and increasing overall engagement.

Thanks for the support on the blog! Awesome to hear about what you took away from it. I really thought it was nice to hear how FC Barcelona had just let the women's team play there matches at Camp Nou. That is a huge win for the women's team to get the full experiences of being a FC Barca team. Truly it is an improvement for both gender teams to get engagement and give women the same opportunities.
DeleteHello, I agree that the journey of women in European soccer has been tough due to historical challenges and ongoing sexism. While Spain's women's national football team has made progress since 1980, they still face criticism and unequal pay. Events like Luis Rubiales' controversial kiss highlight persistent machismo attitudes. To empower women in sports, we need equal pay advocacy, inclusive environments from grassroots to pro levels, and awareness campaigns to challenge sexist narratives. Increasing women's representation in leadership roles is also crucial for driving change. By addressing these issues, they can create a more inclusive and empowering environment for women in sports in Europe and Spain.

Hi! I was pleased to read that you are on the same page about women in sports/European soccer. The idea you mentioned about women having leadership roles being a crucial part of making things change in the industry was a really unique response and thought it was smart. The representation not only in the sports team itself but even staff, coaching and more could really make a difference.
ReplyDeleteI loved this article's about the challenges and progress of women in football, particularly in Spain and Europe, and thought it was so inspiring!. It brings focus to the historical barriers that women have faced in participating in the beautiful game and the ongoing struggles against sexism and discrimination within the industry. What resonated with me was the discussion of the role of role models and the importance of representation in empowering girls and women to pursue their dreams in football. I love that the article highlights the steps that have been made in recent years, such as the establishment of women's leagues and the increasing visibility of female athletes, while also acknowledging the work that still needs to be done to achieve true equality in pay and opportunities. - Morgan Lyons
ReplyDeleteThank you so much for the positive feedback about this blog! I do believe the point you mentioned of role models was super important to me too as I had so many people to look up to when I was younger and I understand that importance now that I am older. Along with so many other points you mentioned I really enjoyed hearing what you have to say.
DeleteI really enjoyed reading this article, and liked how relevant it was as someone currently living in Spain. To empower women in Europe and Spain's sports industry, it's important to continue promoting gender equality through policy and investment in infrastructure and resources dedicated to women's sports. Also being aware of how the media is representing both men's and women's sports while also educating people on these gender inequalities. I think a good way Spain can continue to grow towards this, like you said, is by using role models and empowering girls while they're young.
ReplyDeleteHi so happy you are able to take away so much information from this blog. I am really glad that we are on the same page about using the role models and empowering girls while they are young can be really important.
DeleteGreat post! I really liked how you mentioned how important role models were for you when you were younger, and how it is important to continue promoting gender equality through policies. I think this goes along with your other post about Title IX. I think for further empowerment, we need to create more policies and generate more media coverage on women and not just men. I understand there are challenges and pushback, but as long as we keep fighting for what is right, I believe we will be able to create an even better space for women in sports.
ReplyDeleteThank you for taking the time to read by post! I 100% agree that Title IX can make such a huge impact on what girls can do in sports and give them that voice to overcome sexists culture. I can see a general trend that we all believe policies are a smart way of going about changing the industry. It will definetly take some time to get women close to men but it is possible!
